Joanna Porackova

Joanna Porackova has been celebrated for her “soaring majesty” (Opera News) and “huge vocal and emotional range” in both the mezzo soprano and soprano dramatic repertoire. She was hailed by the Boston Globe as a “powerful soprano with a heartfelt, involving sense of the music’s inner drama (singing Brünnhilde), in Wagner’s “Immolation Scene.”  The Boston Musical Intelligencer praised her for “using her impressive instrument to full dramatic effect” for the mezzo soprano solo in Verdi’s REQUIEM with the Masterworks Chorale.  Her “warm smooth voice rang out over Wagner’s heavy orchestral texture… clearly at home in the role of Brünnhilde,” singing “Immolation Scene” with the Longwood Symphony directed by Jonathan McPhee. The New York Sun, in reviews of DIE WALKÜRE in the Easter Salzburg Festival with the Berliner Philharmoniker under the direction of Sir Simon Rattle singled her out as “foremost of the Valkyries…she was girlish and fantastic.” The New York Times praised her for singing with “great fervor and skill” as Magda Sorel in THE CONSUL directed by the composer himself Gian Carlo Menotti at the Washington National Opera, and for “transmitting the character’s obsessive passion and warmth” as Senta at Katharina Wagner’s directorial debut of DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER.

 

She sang Isolde in TRISTAN UND ISOLDE with the Grand Theatre de Tours, France, under the direction of Jean Yves Ossonce. The Neue Züricher Zeitung acclaimed her for her “technical mastery” in the complex title role in the world premiere of Rolf Liebermann’s MEDEA at the Stadtheater in Bern under the direction of Daniel Klajner. James Conlon later engaged her for the same role with the Paris Opera Bastille. She made her Alice Tully Hall debut (Lincoln Center) singing Anaide to Jerome Hines’ MOSE IN EGITTO the New York Times hailed her for “the most stageworthy..soprano blossomed.”

 

She has been engaged with the Aix en Provence, Easter Salzburg, and Opera North (Canada ) Festivals, Washington National Opera,Paris Opera Bastille, Grand Theater de Tours, Klagenfurt, Würzburg, Bern, Stralsund, Hong Kong, Baltimore, Boston Lyric, Opera Boston, Seattle, Connecticut, Anchorage,  Commonwealth Lyric, Miami, and Boston Bel Canto Opera Companies.  She has performed the title roles of NORMA,TOSCA,AIDA,MEDEA,TURANDOT,DALILA, RUSALKA, CARMEN, SALOME, and ISOLDE.  She has also performed the Komponist in ARIADNE AUF NAXOS, Amneris in AIDA, Lady MACBETH in MACBETH. Giorgetta in IL TABARRO,Magda Sorel in THE CONSUL, Amelia in UN BALLO IN MASCHERA, Kundry in PARSIFAL, and Senta in DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER.

 

She has performed in concert Wagner’s WESENDONCK LIEDER, Strauss’s VIER LETZTE LIEDER, both the mezzo and soprano roles in Verdi’s REQUIEM, and the Mahler Second Symphony, Mozart REQUIEM, Durufle REQUIEM, and alto solo in Handel’s MESSIAH , and the Beethoven Ninth Symphony.

 

She has performed with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Cambridge , North Shore , Salem, Plymouth, Boston Civic, Lexington, Nashua, and Longwood Symphonies, as well as the Symphony Pro Musica, Masterworks Chorale, Ars Musica Chorale, and the Fine Arts Chorale.

 

Ms Porackova has worked under the direction of Sir Simon Rattle, Gian Carlo Menotti, James Conlon, Daniel Klajner,  Jean Yves Ossonce, David Stern, Francisco Noya, Jonathan Mcphee, Thomas Bo, Jeffrey Brody, Henrik Nanasi, Mark Churchill, Steven Karidoyanes, and Cynthia Woods.

 

She has performed recitals at the Diaspora Museum, Israel; Paris Conservatory, Gerlesborgsskolan,
Sweden; and the prestigious Beaulieu Abbey (UK) Concert Series, and the Boston, Chicago, and New York Wagner Society Concert Series.  Her distinguished recital pianists have included John Bell Young, Dag Achatz, Bradley Pennington, Jeffrey Brody, Rainer Armbrust, Steven Steiner, Sophia Zamanskaya, and Olga Rogach.

 

Ms Porackova’ s radio and TV credits include: GOOD MORNING AMERICA, RADIO BOSTON, ARTE, WGBH, SWISS NATIONAL RADIO, and she was the solo artist on the BBC Special THE ESTATE.  She appears on the Bel Air Classiques DVD Die WALKÜRE with the Berliner Philharmoniker conducted by Sir Simon Rattle.  She released a CD on the Americus Record Label HOW FAIR THIS PLACE, songs by Mednter, Prokofiev, and Rachmaninoff with Dag Achatz.  Another CD has been released on the Americus Label. SPRING WATERS with songs and arias of Dvorak, Verdi, Bellini, Medtner and Rachmaninoff with pianists, Bradly Pennington and John Bell Young.

 

A winner of numerous awards and competitions, Ms Porackova was a semi finalist in THE RICHARD TUCKER FOUNDATION COMPETITION, a fellowship award winner in THE OPERA THEATER INTERNATIONAL under the direction of Jerome Hines, a grant competition winner from the Wagner Society of New York where she was also prominently listed in the AMERICAN WAGNER SINGERS GOLD BOOK,  She also was the first place winner in the JERUSALEM VOCAL COMPETITION, and first place winner in the BOSTON NATS COMPETITION.

 

She will sing Mahler SONGS OF THE WAYFARER with the New Philharmonia Orchestra in November 2016.
